I’m interested in the fact that Queen Elizabeth, our Head of state and Head of the Church, visited Birmingham today. In the wake of the Paris attacks, the police stepped up security, though they had received no specific threats, and the visit was a success. I think that this is good news, but so far there has been no mention of it on Twitter ‘Trends’. I remain fascinated by the things which seem to be regarded as ‘trendy’ (or important?) on Twitter… and the things which aren’t!
A couple of months ago our church leaders decided to do a series of sermons focussed on subjects of ‘topical interest’, and they made their choice of topics on the basis of feedback from members of the congregation. This morning’s sermon, delivered by the wife of our rector, was on assisted dying. I thought that her sermon was superb. The readings chosen for this topic were Ecclesiastes 3: 1-14 and Luke 2:25 – 38. Our preacher also quoted from Psalm 139 :13-16. I am thankful that our leaders have taken up a firm position on this subject, as they have on other subjects.
On a different subject I have been following the #justpray hashtag on Twitter. I am very good at moaning about Twitter, but I do have something positive to say about it in this respect – thank goodness the Lord’s Prayer is not banned on Twitter 🙂
Have you read Toby Sumpter’s commentary on Job? If so, do you have any thoughts on it? Do you believe the three “friends” were part of the trial?
