Today’s question:
Do you see any parallels between the great commission and the exodus? I don’t want to get Echo-crazy. Just from a surface level, there some to be some connections: confrontation with “the name,” a sending out, baptism, and the nations called to the Lord. Am I crazy, or is there something going on here?
Within this video, I reference the following books and articles:
Peter Leithart, ‘Jesus as Israel: The Typological Structure of Matthew’s Gospel’
Peter Leithart, The Gospel of Matthew Through New Eyes: Volume One—Jesus as Israel
Andrew Wilson and Alastair Roberts, Echoes of Exodus

It seems as if the “original” Exodus from Egypt was meant as a “type” or foreshadowing of the “true” Exodus from “Old Creation” (i.e. “in Adam”) to “New Creation” (i.e. “in Christ”), accomplished by Christ’s redemptive atoning death on the cross for us.
In that sense, “Exodus” is a motif of “salvation” or redemption, which is why it is repeated so many times in the Bible.
I did co-write a book on this subject… 🙂
Yes, you did! I read it and learned much! Let’s hope others do also and “see” w/ spiritual eyes!
Alastair,
King Cyrus is a “type” or foreshadow of Jesus (note Isaiah 45:1 – my “annointed”). Cyrus released the Jews from Babylonian captivity as the “type” to the “antitype” of Christs 2nd Coming – This World/Age destroyed [ fall of Babylon] ). Lastly, the “drying up Euphrates” in Revelation 12:13 is “antitype” to the “type” where Cyrus diverted Euphrates River to enter and destroy historical Babylon.
So his decree in 2 Chronicles 36:23 to “build God a house in Jerusalem” is intentionally foreshadowing Jesus’ Great Commission to the 12 disciples, and its’ consummation at Christ’s 2nd Coming, when New Jerusalem descends from above.
God Bless!
So, I’d like to see you do a video on “The Fall of Babylon: In Type (Historical) and Antitype (Christs’ 2nd Coming) !!
Actually, the Antitype noted above has 2 parts: 1) The Great Commission and, 2) Christ’s 2nd Coming to reflect the “already but not yet” nature of the Exodus from Babylon.
