A few months ago, some of my closest friends in Durham promised to create a planet cake with me upon the submission of my PhD. This weekend, with the help of a gifted six year old cake decorator, we finally got around to making it. The following are pictures of its construction, which I thought that I would share here (click on any of the pictures to scroll through, or to take a closer look).
- Chocolate cores
- Trimming a chocolate core
- The chocolate core in marble coloured vanilla cake
- Trimming the second layer
- The two internal layers
- The two halves of the cake
- Trimming the final layer
- The two halves together
- The base, covered with fondant
- Piping the icing onto the cake
- The outline of the first continent
- The finished cake, with some help from a six year old!
- Europe
- The first cut
- The first slice
- A slice of Europe
- The earth cake
Wow. And I thought my four-and-a-half-hour “Ruska Torta” took a long time! I’m guessing this took more than that. Of course, if I had friends to help….Congratulations on the cake and on your work!
Thanks! It was created over two afternoons and evenings, interspersed with several other activities. 🙂
Thanks for doing this! It is really clever, and it obviously was great fun to do. We have just gone back from a seventieth birthday party, but are off to bed now. Much love, and many blessings, Mummy.

Amazing! Actually looks tasty too 🙂
It is extremely tasty! It is also dairy and gluten free, but you would never guess it.
