Wow!

Foucault's Pendulum — Umberto Eco
I finally finished it last night. On balance I think that I preferred The Name of the Rose, but both books are simply superb. I plan to reread both of them multiple times.

  1. Paul Baxter's avatar Paul Baxter says:

You remind me that I need to put this one on the reading shelf again. I haven’t read it since college, but it affected me very powerfully back then. I thik deep down, in my youth, I had some temptation toward the sort of gnostic/occult power seeking which is the subject of this one. It was a good reminder that there is nothing at the end of that path.

Charles Williams novels cover a lot of the themes from this book, although they are perhaps even more difficult reads.

  2. Back in the day (’89 or ’90), George Grant came to my town to speak at my church, and it was right after this book was released. He was waving it around, quoting from it, and recommending it to anyone who would listen.

I’m really glad I took his advice and read it, even though I’m not attracted to semiotics in any way, just good reads.

Didn’t affect me as much as NotR either, but I firmly believe this is Eco’s second best piece of work.

  3. Good coffee and a cool morning on the patio with the pet dog reading through some fantastic copy, just what more can an individual ask for?
